Introduction

Defense of the Ancient(DOTA) has been there for nearly 3 years though the older version was not as popular as the current version of Allstars. DOTA, the game where by the main objective is to destroy the opponent main throne/tree. Each player, each controlling a hero , chosen from a huge collections of hero(currently 72), will cooperates with their teammate to bring down enemy hero and buildings and finally the main throne/tree.
Many normal ladder players see dota as just a custom games."Its just a lousy custom games for players who cant micro". Well does this phrase hurt you? I think thats the thought of players that doesn't play dota.

Last year(2005), Singapore was the host for the World Cyber Games Final. In Singapore Nationally WCG, Dota was one of the offical games. The reason why it wasn't competed in the Worlds final is because that DOTA wasn't as popular in other countries except for USA,Singapore and Malaysia. On top of that, many lanshops and community had organised competitions with varies rules for the people to compete in. Some of them include the Gamer Xtreme league, which is a online competition where the team play at home and only meets up for the final knockout.
Many teams have fought in these competitions, and a few teams has made their names in this few tournaments and even the community. So what makes this custom games stands out as compare to other custom games??

Warcraft 3:TFT

Warcraft normal game is usually 1 v 1 and requires the players to be able to micro fast in terms of building units. The players are usually required to concentrate 100% into the game and have no time to rest. Each game may last 10mins to 30mins. Any game longer than that means a good game to watch. Many people got turned away from this because of the compeition micro required from them. Moreover, every mistake make in this game, is your own mistake. You cannot blame others for ur lost. However, just by training, you can improve the chance of winning and decrease your mistake made.

Counterstrike(CS) has been there for quite a long time, and most part of the world is playing CS for competition. CS competition is usually based on a 5 v 5 where there are a few more "balanced" maps for competitive CS. Every mistake made by a player is crucial to the winning or losing of the team. However, in the past version of CS, there are still such things as GOD. What i mean by GOD ?? Well, they are players who had trained in CS so much that they are able to face 3 enemy at 1 time and still manage to kill them. On top of that , CS's strategy is pretty much standard.

Limitless Possiblities

DOTA is a 5 v 5 game, where players choose from 72 heros. The number may seems big in public game. Well it is .. the number of combination that is possible in any game is just too hard to record(I am a Java programmer, i had tried to write a program to generate possible combination
before and write it out to a text file. What i get was a Out of Memory Error). Though the number is big, the number of hero playable in compeition is less than 30(surprisingly). Even with 30heros to choose from, the number of possible combination is still large. On top of that, what dota has and CS doesn't is Item. With item, it led to more possible scenerio that each players or team has to handle in order to win the game. More random factors come in when powerups players pick up powerups. On top of that, the variety of spells enhance the gameplay where anything could happen.

Expectation From teams

What is required off players in this game is not merely individual skill. In dota, there are still such things as GOD. However, a GOD alone can never wins on his own. He still needs the help of other teammates(Even during the era of the pooling rule, teammates must still have skill in farming in order to farm enough to help the GOD). Teamwork is exceptionally important in this game as compared to CS. A critical mistake by any player(note the (s))from any team at a crucial time may just decide the winner for the game.(For example, having your team cleared outside your base during a enemy's push).Each player have to account to the team for any mistake they make in the game. On top of that, there is no such things as next game if you lose, unlike CS, where u have a certain number of games and u usually have another try, after a lost.(Thank god that the normal mode rule where player plays 1 game of Sent, 1 game of Scourge and 1 game of -ar is not implemented in SG).
Flexibility is another important things for dota. If any team is fixed on strategy and tactics, they can not do well in any game. Comparing with Warcraft, players usually decide on what tactics they wan to uses beforehand, DOTA is more flexible and players would have to adapt to different situation in the game. With the introduction of the drafting rule, players would have to adapt to the new form of strategy and tactics, even before the game starts. When the game starts, players have to decide when to attack, when to defend, when to gang heros. This is also differs from CS where each game last less than 5mins and usually the tactics and strategy is decided before the start of each round.

Dota is a game, where each game is filled with limitless possbilities. It requires the most out of every team, which includes tactics and planning, individual ability, teamwork among each other, in game flexibility and ability to adapt to changes and difficulties. I believe that this game by himself, have created a page in the history of gaming. Its a game , just like CS, begins with a modification of the original game and has break through the limitation of just being a mod. Lastly, to end of this articles, lets all hope that one day, the number of tavern can increase to 10 per side and the number of playable hero for compeitions increase to at least 100 and thats where, it will test the most out of each teams.
