with your current stats i think 3 years dont need change is no problem. btw do you know whats the cooler for ? anyway its for overclocking your processor or video card so it can perform better.

Well personally I think 2gb ram is enough for almost everything now. The extra gb is abit redundant lol. Well you should be able to run almost everything with max settings, max resolutions with almost no lag.

Btw i thought no sound card = no sound? lol.

I believe he means dedicated sound card. But i dont think u need a dedicated sound card seriously. The ones that come on ur motherboard r good enough.

2GB is more than enough for now. i dont think DDR2 can run 3 sticks of ram actually. cos they run in pairs. u can check out the new DDR3 rams. i havent read bout them though. dont know how they work.

And 430W is not enough to power ur 8800GTS bro. u need like a 500W at least. Get a silverstone 1.

ddr3 are overpriced at the moment.. some of the boards are hybrid boards which support ddr2 and ddr3.. u might consider getting one..futureproof..just swap a quad core/ddr3 when it become affordable..... yea the powersupply wont be enough to run 8800gts 320mb.. no need additional soundcard, all the boards come with onboard 5.1 HD/8.1HD sound card nowadays..pretty decent sound output.. i suppose most of the shop run out of 6320?? eol liao.. replaced by E6550/E6750/E6850 series.. i might be selling my 8800 gts 320mb and my rams , u interested? thinking of upsizing

yea nvidia's is SLi technology while ati uses crossfire technology. basically its a 2 in 1 kind of thing.

to determine whether u need cooler or not, just check your GPU core temperatures while idling, and while running programmes. Safe temperatures would be 50+ i think.

your motherboard should come with an onboard sound card so don't think u will need another one.

lol gg. com makers usually charge 300< more than wad u can buy it at sim lim square.. mainly bcuz of convenience and service..and they use mainstream parts(which they bought in mass orders to increase profits e.g kingston valuerams.. amd processors.. low end dual core intel processor.) and sell it at higher price... best of all they use intel boards .. and nvidia reference cards by nvidia/ati which perform lousier than other card produced by (eg. asus, gigabyte.) erhm take out the graphic card and sell(if its reference i doubt anyone will buy) and buy new one lor. if u willing to part with $.

If you can go down on a weekday, go to PC Themes at Sim Lim, their stuff is at a lower price and they're helpful and give great service. Only a bit understaffed so if you go on weekends prepare to wait.

Otherwise, Fuwell and Bell are good shops for PC assembly. Cybermind I dunno but some people complained about higher prices there. Try to scout around first.

Dotrk, AMD x64 6000+ is better core clock speed than C2D 6550, why not that? Since it's cheaper also. Of course motherboard must change.

He didn't mention if his Vista is 32-bit or 64-bit.. If it's 32-bit only the 2 extra gig of ram won't be detected leh. I think Kingston ValueRam 2GB should be enough, and ya, all RAM is lifetime warranty.

I would recommend this:

AMD X2 6000+ & Asus M2N-E - Good processor speed at lower price, onboard sound. Less than $400 I think, bang for buck and this processor beats E6550.
Kingston ValueRam PC2-5300 DDR2-667 2x1GB - Reputable brand and now the prices for KVM quite low, less than $50 per 1GB.
Asus Geforce 8800GTS - 3 year warranty on this card (longer than most graphics cards), with good value and performance.
WD Caviar SE 320GBGB SATA - About $135, only a bit more than the 250GB, so much better value.
LG GSA-H62N SATA 18x Super Multi DVD Rewriter - No need to say much about this, about $50+
Silverstone Element 500w - Good PSU, most pros tell me CM Realpower 430W is fine, but if you scared can just go higher to be sure.

I dunno about the crossfired 2600XT.. Cheaper yes, but only by a little bit. 8800GTS price most likely will drop soon due to the release of the 9xxx series, and you will be using up an extra pci-e slot with dual 2600XTs. And I think crossfired motherboard will cost more right?

This is quite close to the setup I'll be getting soon after a lot of research.

i tot i told u before.. intel processor oc huge. around 100% sometime, my E6320 1.6 already can hit 3.5ghz stable.. amd processors are cheap but they oc little like 10-20% only.
even if u dont have exotic coolers/or lazy to spend time on oc.. u just pop an fsb 1333 E6550 intel processor(so ur ram speed default is 667mhz)change to 900, 450x7 = 3.15ghz.
+0.2v or +0.3v (depend on ur ram chipset) to dimm voltage for stability. thats all u have to do...

about why i chose 4gb of twinmos ram.. for little oc or non oc, any value ram from any company will do..800mhz rams(even lousy-average chipset) can easily oc to 900 5-5-5-12 anyway...
its correct to sae that 32bit wont detect all 4gb of memory .. max OS detect is 3gb. BUt it wil be wrong to sae that 4gb of ram are useless..the fact is all 4gb of ram(virtual memory) are in use.

To explain all this u have to understand why is there a 2gb barrier,
since a long time ago`, For a 32bit Windows application(Win32), each application has a full 4GB worth of private addressing space that it can use,
and u can see problem here already.. memory is needed for communication of the hardwares(eg data transfer between video card and cpu),memory is also need for application run by the user so if the user use all for running of application what happens? failure to run program , game , crashes of os.

so Windows Microsoft opted to split up the virtual address space of an application in half; 2GB goes to Windows (kernel space) and 2GB goes to the application (user space). Under normal circumstances this 2GB of space is all a 32bit application has to work with, this is the 2GB barrier microsoft set up.
2gb is used for operation of windows, communication of hardwares(speed up ur loading in a sense since u have more memory to deal with) and 2gb is for u to run ur applications.

some application could use more than 3gb (eg games like supreme commander) and microsoft allow such program to use such big memory.. simply by flagging application
as LARGEADDRESSAWARE.

alot of games nowadays already using 3gb of ram.

so why 4gb and not 3gb then,
1) futureproof
Microsoft might change the basic princples of 32bit os in the future or encourge 64bit as mainstream a few years down the road.

2)the extra 1gb are actually in use by the communication of hardwares/os

about the 2600xt i scout around b4 $179 is a ok price....about crossifre boards costing more..non crossfire boards and crossfireboards in the $200 range are only $10-$20 apart..the cheapest i could find was the P5k lowest end of P35 also~ around $200?.. 2x2600xt cost $100 less than the 8800gts 320mb.. somemore if u not using 22inch like mi 2x2600xt is already sufficent for 19inch` and its performance will win 8800gts 320mb if ati catalyst 7.1 does wat it promise of 80% gain in performance.

nvidia = publish cards early.. and may win to win ati earlier on


ati = delayed release of cards and drivers but given the time for its drivers to mature it will win nvidia

all of us 8800gts/gtx are dumping our cards .. for the upcoming pci-e 2.0 cards. i planning to get ati cards

Does not matter for overclock processors as their life span is about 10 years, but your comp most probably last max 5 years. Overclock will only reduce it's lifespan by a few years. So end of the day, even your overclock the processor would be living pass your PC lifespan.

PCI-E 2.0 cards are cards which make use of pci-express 2.0 slots..currently only x38 chipset boards and future chipset boards have those slots.. pci-e 2.0 slots have dual the bandwidth of pci-e 1.0(the one we using now) and a higher voltage output(so that u need not use extra power connector).

about overclocking, as long as the temperatures are within acceptable range, ur goods are safe... hmm take ram stick for example.. premium rams are actually handpicked by the ram makers themselve from the valueram piles...sometimes u do find valuerams (gd chipset) which oc as much as premium rams.premium rams runs at a high voltage compared to value rams.. so u can take it as its factories overclock the rams for u. even factories are ocing so why worry^^

not sure about it.. but from wat i know two cards in same speed using DX10 and DX10.1 have no much difference in performance.. just that DX10.1 are used for new upcoming high performance card.. o.O memory controller for amd`` is found in amd processor instead of on the board...so the processor determine the speed of the memory supported..... for many non-ocers(those who dono how to tune memory speed) use 667mhz cuz its the default memory speed used for 1333fsb processors....btw latest offer from bell, 1gb ddr2 667mhz kingston valueram for $42..

cheap meh? dont think so ba. service also ok nia, although appear to be good.
I know the boss gary and his sis, i think i have spend a total of $20+k in their shop 5-6 years ago, excluding those others that i recommend to them. Sometime even recommend me brands or models that are not so reliable when the one i asked for they dont carry.

about 2 years ago my last purchase from them was 8 computers for office use. No discount at all from the price of the pricelist, the so called discount is they dont charge u for assembling the coms, and still charge for delivery.

the last time was i walk past, brought a friend to buy a hdd from them, then ask them how much is a sata cable since i need 1 for my cousin, the boss sister quote me $8, i was like wtf, u know who i am still quote me this kind of price? i walk away, go to another shop which i also know the boss but not too well, the price tag was $3 per cable, so i ask him how much, he say take, he got alot, 3 pieces enough?

from that time onwards i dont even walk pass pc themes anymore. happen to met gary at video pro once and say hi thats all.

dont think u destroy his belief, with his knowledge he sure know where is the right place for the right parts. Sometime some shops can give really good discount for certain items, so good until will feel paiseh one.

newer models of laptop can be easily open up.. add rams, change harddrive... welll if u know where they are located at .. u can go ahead.. seek help from shop if u donno.

budget how much i help u write a list.. just helped beanie fix a com around 1.4k.. get a crossfireboard, change 8800gts 320mb to 2x 2600xt performance almost same as 8800gts 320mb(2x$179~ < $470.. save around $100)..
ddr3 are overpriced at the moment.. some of the boards are hybrid boards which support ddr2 and ddr3.. u might consider getting one..futureproof..just swap a quad core/ddr3 when it become affordable..... yea the powersupply wont be enough to run 8800gts 320mb.. no need additional soundcard, all the boards come with onboard 5.1 HD/8.1HD sound card nowadays..pretty decent sound output.. i suppose most of the shop run out of 6320?? eol liao.. replaced by E6550/E6750/E6850 series.. i might be selling my 8800 gts 320mb and my rams , u interested? thinking of upsizing
