"Question: What event in the middle of a DotA game do players from both sides hate most?
Answer: <player> has left the game.
Why do the players hate this? Why are leavers loathed so much? How about those laggers who often get disconnected? We invoke Psychology 101 to resolve this. Sad but true. Human nature makes us curse, groan or sigh when we see those red letters flash in the screen. Why? Originally, the game is a 5-on-5 match. With Player X out, the game is now 4 versus 5.
Case 1: You are the teammate of X
Sub case 1:
If your team has the advantage, say inner towers of Scourge are down already while 2 of your outer towers are still up, you would probably smile a cocky smile and say, what the heck? Those guys are noobs anyway. Then you will press ENTER and type, carry on! Well, sometimes, the Sentinel boys, who were already winning, could carry their victory till the end. And you will probably say once you hit mega creeps, OMG, 4v5? You still lost? NOOBS! And somewhere out there, five prides just got pricked. But hey, you won the freaking game! But, wait, hold on, it is not always like this. What if this guy who left is your star player? And with him gone, the Scourge starts whooping your asses to high heaven? What will you say in the end? You will just whine and whine, saying, you just won because <Tinker> left. But does that make you feel any better? You still lost. On record, you lost.
ANSWER: You are either feel cocky or shaken. Depends on your self-confidence.
Sub case 2:
If your team is on the losing end, it is another loss for you guys. You will call out, GG or RM? Fine, fine. But hey, what if you are all late gamers and you know you can still snag a win if you just work hard enough, capitalizing on the drunkenness of your opponents who are already tasting the victory that really could be yours? Well, most people would give up at this point in time. But good players do not. Are you a good player? You do not have to tell us. By good, I do not mean good in the game itself. Your attitude counts as well. So, ask yourself. Are you a good player or not? Would you give up or not? Of course if the enemy is on a pure pawnage, it would be polite to call GG already? but mehn, there is something wrong with your DotA skills if so early in the game, your team is already pawned over and over again!
ANSWER: You would probably just call it GG. But if you are a martyr or a masochist, you might just win.
Case 2: You are enemy of the team of X
okay, this is what I call the truth hurts
Sub case 1:
So you are winning. The enemy is hit by another big loss. So what? It is a clear win for your team. BUT now, your foes have an excuse for losing. You hate this. I know why. You hate excuses. I know why. Pride. nuff said.
Sub case 2:
You are losing. The enemy lost a player. OH YEA. You can now turn the tables. And eventually, yes, with your pro-ness, you did! But someone from across the street would comment, you noob, you just won because X left! OUCH. As I have said, the truth hurts. But is this the truth? We would not know because he left! But again, excuses. And again, it is your Pride that is killing you.
So that is it. Leavers are those mighty monsters who prick your pride till your entire soul gushes out. Case 1, your pride is challenged and put to a test, Case 2, it is insulted? It is like being said, you are an ugly ____ face-to-face when you know you are not.
But how can we deal with this? Well, raise your EQ and you will do fine. But that will only solve Case 2. Coz in Case 2, whatever happens, the enemy has excuses with them because they are the ones who lost a teammate. Just deal with it. Endure it. But please tell them, if I had lost a teammate, I would still win. That will make the difference.
They may scoff at you. Ignore them. Just show them what you can do."
