I'm actually trying to get a new comp soon and should be getting a customized one so i'm having problems on which mobo to have and which processor. For the mobo i'm thinking of either Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Intel P965) or ASUS P5B Premium Vista Edition (Intel P965) but i think that the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 does not support quad processor. Another problem is that i'm actually indecisive about getting duo or quad processor. Please give me some suggestions and opinions of what you guys think. Thanks in advance! Will be looking forward to getting some response!

are there anyone that can help me? thank you!

Quad cores are not really useful right now cause duo cores take care of just about everything. RUnning most games with max settings with a duo core processor isn't too difficult if you have the right hardware.

Dunno about the motherboard though. Dotrk can probably help !

hmms but most probably i'll get this comp next year early jan& my friend was telling me that i should get a quad core , not to say it's just adding some more money to get a better processor? but the Gigabyte mobo cant support quad processor so i'm not sure which to get ): , dotrk please helppp!

Duo or Quad, if for gaming, dont think there will be much difference, especially Crysis and Quake War. Slightly better for UT3-DM, according to figures but dont think our naked eyes can tell the difference. Mobo wise probably leave for the expert to help.

next year maybe should get 45nm QX9650 Extreme, should be release by then but maybe i am wrong. Up to 12mb L2 Cache.

so you're saying that it's up to me to get either quad or duo? but coz of games like crysis , my friend told me to get quad one as he said will support the game better. i'm actually thinking about future use as the new com will probably last me for quite sometimes & if i get a duo processor then as you know computer thingy get replaced and renewed quite easily, who knows? maybe nxt time the duo core will eventually be replaced by quad? i'm thinking about this part. hmms thanks for the advice about the processor,i'll most probably get a quad one ^^ thanks! yep i'm still unsure about the mobo, experts please help! thanks!

sorry but i'm still new about the processor and mobo stuff thingy. can you explain to me what all of these 12mb L2 cache is about? what do you mean by L2 cache and the 12mb?

965p-ds3 supports duocore/quadcore but do not support future 45mn processors.i do have a 965p-ds3 for sale though .. lol. eh dont care about QX9650 Extreme or watever. its going to cost you a bomb , sae $1500 for the processor. if i had a tight budget i put more bang into card than processor.

pro lai liao. :)

yes the difference for gaming really not much, graphic card is more important. 2 extra frames for crysis and quake war is not going to make much difference, especially we are talking about 140+.

what do you suggest? i'm actually getting a customised computer so in a nutshell i should focus on graphic instead of processor? but i thought processor is equally impt? oh yeah i heard something about crossfire , my friend told me it's better in terms of quality to just a single graphic card. please enlighten me !

lcd size doesnt really matters as i have a 17 inch lcd currently and if i want to get a new one i will get a 19 one i guess.

lcd size does matters for u have to get a more powerful card for a bigger screen.

1200-1600 lets see
amd athlon 64x2 6000+ 3ghz }around $350-400
+ a cheap board which support this processer }
4gb kingston value ram }$ 37x4 = $148
xpertivision 8800gt ~$379
western digital 400gb Harddisk $160
casing NZXT trintiy $108
samsung dvd rw -$50
Coolerrmaskter Real Power 550W - $150 ( i prefer to use more than enough power)

total $1350.

well i think the amd athlon 64x2 6000+ can try to bargain with the uncle..
cuz its like hard to sell LOl. my fnd just bought the prcoessor for 200(a big discount) @ bell the uncle give him discount.

About 1270 from Fuwell. 8800GT has no DX10.1, whereas the upcoming ATi cards do. I might buy the 8800GT, but I wanna make sure ATi's not gonna coming out with something cheaper now.

Whatever I get, whether 8800GT, 3850 or 3870, will be very good for me already - in fact too good. So I'm just looking for a good price now. Plus I need to eat. 200 to survive for November. Hehe.

Edit: I don't feel anything much at the moment, then again my Hellgate does something weird where it disables my Aero interface so it goes back to the XP kind of interface, but in red (which is the colour I chose).

Reason I chose Vista is for DX10.. We're going to upgrade to it anyway. I see no point in buying XP then buying Vista again. :)

Hmm. It likes to ask you if you run a program. Very suspicious. Like I run something then it'll ask "Did you run this?" then must click yes and stuff. Some people find it irritating, but for me I'm fine with it.

Looks super good of course. The aero interface is gorgeous and when you move your mouse over an application in the taskbar, it pops up with a small window showing what's going on in that window. Some things take a little getting used to, but it's easy to use.

So I'm very happy with it - then again it's only been a day.

Next year January is a great time to buy. In fact, why are you asking now sia. Hardware moves so fast. When the time comes ask again, what may be good now could be obsolete then, or much cheaper.

I posted a question on my rig back in late August I think. Decided on my config in September. Now my rig is pretty different from that time because of how the scene changed - prices are crazy.

You've got PM!

Anyway you can look at the forums on hardwarezone.com where I did a lot of research.. there are stickies on full systems and stuff like that which you can look at in the Hardware Clinic. Also people give tips on where to buy certain things. I can say I've learnt a LOT from there about what is good and what isn't.

oh haha sorry! so i'll see ya when you're online! anyway , what do you think of AMD and intel processor?

I'll compare AMD to Intel only for Dual core, since AMD isn't out with quad core yet.

AMD's highest is the 6000+ one, whereas Intel's would be the 6850.

If you are going for Intel 6550 and below (and not overclocking) it's better to go for an AMD processor because AMD would be much less pricey so you get better stock speed for same/lower price.

On the other hand, as Dot-dotrk has educated me, Intel CPUs have much more overclocking potential than AMD CPUs. So if you intend to overclock, you will get better performance from an Intel CPU.

Generally a lot of people ask for Intel even if they don't overclock and are going for a processor that's easily matched by an AMD which will be less expensive. Intel is dominating the market, thus a lot of people blindly follow. I'm not saying Intel is lousy - clearly if you know how to stretch it, you can go further with it. But do think about whether you're paying for the name or whether you'll really make use of what Intel has to offer.

Next year when AMD rolls out its quad core CPUs it's gonna lose out to Intel again in how high it can go. Maybe mid year or third quarter it might make a comeback. Too early to say. -shrugs-
