Have you ever canceled an outing with your friends to stay at home to get the Tier 5 Chestpiece that you must absolutely have?
Have you ever told your girlfriend to come to your house to watch a movie instead of the cinema so that you can log onto your Auction House to see if your item was sold?
Have you ever taken MC or leave off work or school just to go for an early morning raid with your guild?
Well, if your answer is yes to anyone of the above statements, then perhaps its time to rethink. You might be hopelessly addicted to your game, and yet not know it.
Many addicted gamers often respond with "I am not addicted, i can stop anytime i want to," when questioned by people about their gaming addiction. Stop and think for a moment. Does this answer sound familiar? Oh wait, isnt that the answer you (or your friend/family) gave also when asked about your smoking addiction? (If you smoke, that is.)
The greatest mistake anyone can make is to think that they are in control of the situation. This self belief will only leave you to delve deeper into the chasm of gaming.
Let me relate an example to you. Several years ago, i had a very wonderful girlfriend. However, at that time i was playing Diablo 2 almost 24/7. At that point of time, it got so bad me and my girlfriend never went out anymore. Meetings would always be at my home. When i go over to her place, i would move my laptop with me as well.
It got so bad, whenever i died in a PvP situation or when i went on those countless MF or Pindle or Baal runs and never yielded anything good, i would shout at my girlfriend if she tried to talk to me. How stupid and silly i was, now that i am reflecting back on my past actions.
In the end, she took a bottle of Chivas, and poured it down my computer's moniter (I swear i am not making this up) and then broke off with me. It was only there and then that i realized how stupid and foolish i was.
In the news, we have seen children die as a result of their parents leaving them unattended to play games.
Remember the Legend of Mir incident in China? For the uninitiated, this person from China KILLED another person who stole his virtual sword.
Ask yourselves: Whenever you die in DotA for instance, do you find yourself swearing or slamming your mouse or keyboard in anger? It might seem insignificant, but i kid you not, this goes much deeper.
I have seen people fight in lanshops over the most minor of things, from anything to KSing to sore losing. It doesnt help that the mentality of Singapore gamers are not very good at the moment. It brings out the ugliest side of us.
Very often, you see people argue in Allchat and insults to your family, arranging to meet outside to 'settle', giving hp number etc. It really depresses me to see people behave like this.
What can be done? Well, the first thing to do is to realize that you have a problem. Do not deny it or try to push it aside.
What you can do is to regulate yourself the number of hours you play. I am not telling you to break your Warcraft 3 CD (Especially now that 1.21b does not need your CD :P) or to uninstall your World of Warcraft. Games are great. I have made many strong friends in games and they continue to play a vital part in my life. Just remember to never let gaming take precedence over your real life activities.
If your friend asks you to chill out on a Saturday night, go ahead! Rediscover the outside world and you might rediscover the game that you ENJOYED playing; instead of making the game a routine. Wheres the fun in it?
In World of Warcraft, there are many players who all rush to chiong to hit level 70. Once they log into the game server, they immediately rush off to grind exp or to raid an instance. How many of us took the time to explore the lush, beautiful world that the game has to offer.
Life is already a ratrace, why make your leisure one as well?
