I think now would be an appropiate time to reflect on the meaning of Respect.

Just a few weeks ago before Euro 08 ended, i remembered seeing the word 'Respect' etched onto the player's shirts, and i wondered deep inside me; did these football players really respect each other on the field as much as they loved kicking the ball?

The important thing i want to point out here is: "How much do you actually respect the players who are playing alongside u in the field?" I think the worst thing that a player can do is to fire a flow of expletives and continue showering curses onto the one who isn't performing well, which can really piss people off and make their radiant expressions change to a face of disappointment. It not only shows a bad attitude on the part of the gamers but affects the whole mood of the game altogether, causing the player who is feeding to continue plummeting even further.

In actual fact, I never expected anyone to understand the true meaning of what it is to respect your teammates.

The worse thing that can happen while you are feeding is when your team starts to blame you. And the feeling plain sucks, because you feel responsible for the loss. It also creates a mental barrier in you; causing you to have this negative mindset that you can't play Dota to save your life. From there, your emotions just tend to get even heavier, especially if u just had a rough day at work or school.

What i want to tell you guys today is, you should always respect your teammates. That basic respect is critical to the success of a team; it can make or break the team entirely. I think that is a very criticial point about us Singaporean gamers; we never give our respect to those who are beneath us. Is it really so satisfying to annoy your teammates? For god's sake, it's only a game and it's casual, and what can games tell about a person's inner-mold character?

Nothing. Absoulutely nothing.

Would you rather be hanging out with a good-mannered, spontaneous guy who can't really play dota well or with some ruffian, vulgar gangster who only knows how to stay behind the computer 24/7 and keep throwing insults at people he doesn't even know?

We seem to have forgotten the reason why we are even playing these games. Is it to find and make new friends or rather to make people feel like they have just been thrown off the empire state building? I mean, wouldn't you feel guilty if you were the better guy this game and you kept a relentless string of remarks on the feeding noob, never considering the fact that he might be a great guy with a great personality and just looking to destress from a day of work? And you furiously scolding him simply ruins his pure intentions of having a good game. These kind of things just make people wanna quit gaming to avoid the many ugly abuses that other gamers hurl at them. Is it really so hard to just treat this as a game, and leave it there?

I bet only the best of us do, and that is barely enough.

"If we have self-respect, we do not need the respect from others, but nevertheless we usually receive the respect from others, because we earn their respect by our actions, which are based on self-respect."

The should be read by all players.

Respect is one of the most important attribute for dotarians to maintain, yet it is hard to define. On its broadest level respect is the acknowledgment that someone has value. They may be professional dota player but the importance on this value is that it changes peoples reactions towards you, usually in a positive way. A person is more likely to treat you with respect if you do what is asked of you instead of arguing with them. It is the value you earned while doing what you were told that has lead the person to respect you and therefore treat you nicely.

Whenever there is a person owning in a team, there bound to be a person that is either not killing much or is feeding.
So almost everygame, the owners (Farmers) are the ones that are blaming those who fed.

If the farmers do not farm well, they would probably blame the supporters for not supportive enough or giving excuses like "Why didn't you ward this spot . etc".

Lets see, if you're owning the game and your teammate (supporter) did not even ward the whole game, would you blame him if you win the game?

This is the 2 different thing, losing the game starts the dispute between the teammates.

Maybe instead of league by levels , can open a league by attitude. That might sound lame but wonder how'd it be like there.

This ugly trend is quite prominent in Singapore, which sets me thinking. Why?

Lack of respect for others?
Gaining sense of superiority over putting down the 'noobs'?
Venting all anger at an easy target?

In my opinion, all these might be the case, but it is also highly due to the fact of the obscurity the Internet provides, and the oppressive nature of our society now.

Can't speak up and tell that idiot talking on the phone in the cinemas to shut up? Can't tell those people pushing into the trains to stop it and let people out first? Afraid of getting into an argument and making a scene?

Well, now you can show all displeasure ONLINE. Where NO ONE will know how you look like, due to the shield of anonymity the Internet provides.

Does this reflects the cowardice in people? Or does it just reflect another ugly, yet unavoidable side of human nature? Either way, it will be hard to stop this trend, unless the Internet no longer provides any anonymity, which is another problem in itself.

actually the soccer players also do not respect soccer, there is actually a behind scene before they kick soccer and they already know who will win and lose, all this because of money. And there is one event when last time the game manager in singapore sent the runner-up in compy to compete in wcg i think because the runner-up bribed the manager and the manager just said some nonsense like the runner-up has more teamwork and cooperation all this bull. MONEY BRINGS DOWN RESPECT.

It appears even when during a LAN game... and or aftermath of a poor engagement during a LAN competition.

Players usually immerse themselves too much into the game and went emotional. It tends to happen from time to time, and as the player grow older and mature, there will be a certain self-control there.

I do think that it is also due to them friends being friends in the first place, uses that kind of language even during normal days.

On the note of respect, I think we should all improve on that factor in dota or any online play. Actually there are better and more constructive ways of telling off teammates who are underperforming, a good way is to do it politely and without any curse or swear words.

You will be surprised by the effects.

Heh. There are many cases of biased managers favouring their own players over those who should have deserving rights to play as they had fought hard for the top place. While you might say 'Money brings down respect', how about thinking of some ways as to eliminate this biasness so the slots can have a fair and equal playing field.

IMO, the whole problem with 'money brings down respect' can't really be abolished nor changed. Why?

It's like asking the world to abolish the usage of money. Humans are born naturally greedy. You can take the high road and tell us you're not, but most of us human beings have a deep desire to gain more. More money will bring us more of whatever we desire.

And it is because of this, where corruption and crimes comes about.

Money is the root of all evil.

That's true, however i hope to see a future gaming world that can be built more on the foundation of principles than the insatiable greed for money

Yeah well, one could always hope, and hopes are the things that will bring us human beings to a greater level.
