Why one decides to join competitive play.

Leaver-free
The amount of leavers in drafts are as low as none. No plug pulling and other stunts. This ensures a full 5v5 game.

No pub whines
There isn't anyone to accuse that you maphack when you win. They won't cry on stuffs like backdooring, backstabbing. There are little threats such as giving their phone number, taunting you and stuffs.

Level of game play
The thrill and excitment of draft. The assists, the ward wars, the engages... Everyone in the team will work with each other rather than doing their own stuffs in a pub game. Everyone will not stay lane forever and assists one another. The sense of accomplishment when you win a close match, its priceless.

Fame
I believe this is the most attractive factor. The aim to be the next big thing. Sponsorships and stuffs are coming your way. Your nick/team is going to be known among all dota players. Then you get to represent singapore in international competitions. You are the people's champion.

Why one decides to quit competitive play.

Heavy commitment
Competitive dota requires heavy commitments. 4-5 hours of dota and schooling daily gives one a restricted life style. Other commitments will further lessen your amount of sleep time. Sleeping at 2 and waking up at 6, this is what some competitive player experience everyday.

Lack of interest
Playing the same few hero daily. Be it what role you are playing, there would be these few heroes that circulate your life. Some people are sick of warding non stop for every single game, while some are sick of farming silently every game. If roles are switched, then more trainings have to be done.

Lack of competitions
Whats the point of giving so much to dota, with these small amount of competitions lately. Training daily for competitions like once every 2 months unless it is competitive season? The time spent on it, is it worthed it?

With more and more competitive players lately, will competitive DotA live on?

i think so too.... its leaver free... but you need a certain standard to participate that means its tough to be a competitive and when you reach there... quiting just seems so half-hearted...

Pubs always got some jokes from other countries that come to singapore rooms to play. E.g Malaysians and China peoples. Not that I'm bias towards them, but they doesn't seem to understand english and thus cause people to lose their game.

Competitive play also involves the need to have reliable and committed teammates imo. No point that you are putting so much effort and time in it training when your team not all are passionate. As time goes pass, there will bound to be someone who decide to give up due to other factors like e.g work, studies, national service etc.

Singapore gaming also cannot be compared to Korea. Over there, gamers are treated with more respect. The famous ones have their own fanclub. Over here, you tell others who know nuts about gaming that you are a gamer, they will say you have no future -.-.

Our Media also not focused on gaming compared to other countries. America and Korea have their own dedicated TV channel to broadcast live competition to all the people in their country. Thus the gamers over there gain more fame and quicker popularity.

The only way for Singapore to move higher up in the gaming industry is through mass media and change the mindsets of most Singaporeans >> "Gaming is not just for kids".

Finally, the sportsmanship and typical mindsets of most gamers. I have played with those Americans and i noticed there are much much less cursing and swearing compared to singapore players. Singapore players will curse your family, taunt you for your number, ask you out for a fight, when you say meet where, they tell you go to Pasir Ris when you live in Ang Mo Kio. Say what wait outside Cheers with a knife which i think before i even reached, you are already behind the bars. -.-

But competitive can also be fun, it will be good chance to test your skill against the real pro and also basked in the atmosphere and adrenalin rush when you are in the competition yourself.

The bonus of cause would be winning. However, best scenario is that the team can learn and have fun when lose. But this is the hardest part, so of the players/teams take losing too seriously.

So these are part and parcel of competitive DotA.

I agree, its the adrenaline that gets to the players. Players tend to lift their standard of play when they are playing draft games/competitions. Pubbies normally mean that each player is pretty much selfish and more reliant on yourself. Whereas draft matches require full teamwork from each and every player. Gotta know your role!

Aiya...I think there should be a dota competition where those top ranked teams are not allowed to participate, only the unknown teams are the participants.
Or, there can be only 1 or 2 top ranked players maximum in the unknown teams and not more than that.
This way, competitive dota will be more interesting, as those top ranked teams like impreZa, zenith, Ks are not always be the champion. And this way, those underdog and blacksheep players and teams will arise as they are not always lose to those top ranked teams.
Isn't it abit sian if in every competition, the champion is always the same? This is also one of the factor why people dont have the urge to join in competitive scene. They will have a thinking that they cant beat those top ranked teams. How they can improve if they always nervous and lose to teams like Ks, zenith, etc in the end?
Sometimes there are some full potential players in those unknown teams and they never get a victory. Why? It's because they dont have a solid leader. They are being dragged down by their teammates which are not really "pro". If this continues, those potential players will be gone forever.
I believe if one or two top ranked players form their own unknown teams, lead the teams and those unknown potential players, then new underdog players, full potential unknown players, and blacksheep players who might be leading the singapore dota in the future will be discovered soon.
