The game between Cheryl Chocolate Candy (CCC) versus Team U in the final game of the first day of the Open category was slated to be a showdown of two of the best (well, better) teams in the group, but it was not to be.

CCC had first pick with Warlock (WL) then Queen of Pain (QoP), Twin-headed Dragon (ThD), Venomancer and lastly, Enchantress.

Team U countered the first pick of CCC with Chen, Viper, Zeus, Lord of Avernus (LoA) and Visage.

On a side note, both teams did not have many disablers, which meant that whoever had more Area of Effect (AoE) damage or could come out with their combinations first would more often than not, win the engagement. CCC’s combination had some powerful AoE spellcasters, which gave them the advantage in pushing and defending.

CCC having first pick, was on the Scourge side, while Team U picked Sentinels.

CCC’s laning was probably better as well, with QoP mainly soloing top while the Enchantress was hiding in the forest neutral-ling, getting creeps to backstab Team U’s LoA and Viper at top. Middle lane was WL (used by Nef) versus a Zeus who was doing ok and holding his own till somewhere near the middle of the game. Bottom was a disaster for Team U, who had Visage and a Chen whose creeps were few and far apart, up against ThD and Venomancer, which is a very strong lane combination due to their dual slows (Dual Breath and Shadow Strike respectively) and a stun (Ice path).

Bottom lane was getting owned badly, with Visage getting first blooded with the Chen on his team getting killed soon after as well, which led to a level advantage to the already strong combination of ThD (used by Sher, incidentally, the only female player in day one of the competition) and Venomancer.

A level advantage in the middle and top lanes tilting towards CCC soon followed, with the QoP managing to kill the Viper and LoA a couple of times despite the Aphotic Shield and Death Coil which can be used to heal his team mate.

Within the 26th minute, both of the Sentinel middle lane’s outer towers go down to the Infernal of the WL and the Scourge push. At this point in time, the Scourge has a big level and kills advantage due to better catching and movement of their heroes. The WL has soloed and farmed enough to up his Refresher orb early on, which allows him to refresh all his spells and double cast his Rain of Chaos for two Infernals.

The Venomancer used by CCC’s Lcf is very effective at this point in catching stray heroes on Team U’s side and top lane towers go down quickly to two Infernals and a quick push by CCC.

Middle lane’s barracks goes down to the WL but he dies as well, top lane’s barracks soon follow suit. Team U have been unable to stop the pushes due to the fact that they have almost zero AoE and cannot stop the Infernals because nobody in the team was able to farm up a Diffusal Blade which can kill one Infernal in a single Purge.

All this happens within 35 minutes of the game starting, which is very fast considering these are the top two teams of the day.

The Sentinels are seriously under-farmed, with only the Viper having a Sacred Relic and a yet to be completed Black King Bar, with only the recipe lacking. Most of the Sentinels have minor tier one and two items up, whereas the Scourge have been able to farm up some nice end game items such as the QoP’s Skadi and Demon Edge, and the ThD with Dagger of Escape and a Guinsoo with the Voodoo ability, which allows the user to turn and enemy unit into a sheep. The Venomancer opts for a weird item in Dagon, which he uses to KS (Kill Steal) at the end of the game.

The cumulative result of all this? The game ending in 43 minutes with the Sentinels unable to stop the push as CCC’s players keep cycloning them with the Eul’s Scepter of Divinity, and a huge kills advantage of 29 in favour of CCC as opposed to 5 by Team U.

The game promptly ends in 44 minutes and 48 seconds. Congratulations Cheryl Chocolate Candy on winning the game and making it to the finals of the Open category! Well done!
