Why do people participate in forums and create blogs?

This is a general discussion, post your thoughts here.

I realised that everyone has their own reasons in participating in forums. Im not only talking about dota forums but in general. It could be gaming, political, culture etc etc.

Some people are topic selective. They only zoom into threads which they like. Thats mainly because they wish to know more about the topic, and post their opinions. Ultimately, what they want is to have their doubts cleared and/or to see whether others are in agreement to his/her personal views on the topic.

Some people, reads everything. Comment, on everything. Since they cant write everything, most of their comments are usually one-liner. Theres 2 sub groups i guess, one who loves to troll...and another who just gives one-liner comments like 'i agree', 'nice analysis', 'how about?', 'how do you explain...?' as an effort to keep the discussion active.

There are more than that also..i list a few but are there others?

On another point, i like using forums as a platform to do discussion. This is not about dota in particular. I use forum to do group projects. With it, i can minimize as much group meetings as possible which i find is a waste of time. Furthermore, using forum is easier cos what you say is written and recorded. Unlike meetings where you say something and forget what you said the next day. It definitely helps when you do long term projects which spans for months.

What about Blogs? Why do people blog. Personally i dont have one.
I notice that female are more into this form of communication. So i came to a conclusion that blogs serve as a form of emotional satisfaction. You feel good when others read and know more about you or what your organization is doing. Even if no one reads it, the thought of someone reading it may already bring satisfaction. So bloggers, what do you think of this analysis , is it true?
And are there more reasons to why people blog?

All in all, people blog and participate in forums to derive satisfaction, much like why people play Dota for satisfaction.

*And i foresee some people wont be replying in this thread too lol, because it doesnt interest them hehe

Nice analysis there, personally i felt that lots of girls have created blog just to display their pictures to somehow flaunt their figure or spastic things that they do in the public, i agree that it's a form of satisfaction since display picture = people post comments = satisfaction... while there are some other that blog about their personal life as though the blog is private and no one is looking... do you know that almost all the websites including blogs can be just searched through googles without actually registering the search engines? Thus i feel that though a personal blog is a good place to rant your unhappiness or share your personal life however you have to mind every word you say since everyone in the world could be looking at it. Well, forums is more like a place for people with common interest for example dota to gather and state their thoughts, of cos there will be lame people like me or some other fellow that would post lame stuffs, this is basically to encourage people to participate more, to make the forum less deadly and more alive, supposingly without all the spammers, a forum would be much dead, look at all the forums and you can see that there would be some lamers around, since this is not a school forum or some political issues forum, i do not see why lame-ing around should be forbidden, guess just have to stop people from flaming or using foul languages would be enough ^.^ just my thoughts.

haha, because ur very intelligent in mechanics and stuff..i believe there'll only be a few who can write essays and discuss with u at your level~ To me, this dota forum is just a place to chill out and lame around, because there are people here who simply love dota..and having people who share the same interests on the same forum is awesome~

you seem to fancy thinking responses so i'll give u one. people cr8 blogs because its a fantastic tool to voice out to their friends their personal feelings and views regarding anything wordly or unwordly..though it's supposedly *private*, its still unleashed on the world wide web so it's not really complete private yeah?there are some things where one can never reveal~ blogs are cool because you can use it to share ur happy/sad moments with your closest friends or simply some wandering stranger.

looking back at ur own blog can make one laugh because u'll wonder why u even blogged that post~ haha.. so yeah..i know this ain't much but this is probably why people cr8 blogs..
For the emotional satisfaction part, it's very true because for me I feel very relieved when I have ranted everything that's on my mind..whether it's joy or anger.

if u dislike me trolling ur threads, do tell me because i doubt i said anything offensive before and they are mostly unintentional..dun take us too seriously for we are not the most intelligent beings anyway~ =)

to me~ blogs are like online diaries~ you can chose for it to be public~ or~ u can set a password~ simple as that~ blogspot accounts can be password protected if you have the scripting knowledge~ but i you do not~ you can opt to use Livejournal which provides 'personal' blogging~ coz for the posts~ you can set it to private~ then the public can not view it~so basically~ girls blog~ some like what dawrf said~ flaunts~ others~ life accounts~ for example~ mine~ =) you can choose to reveal ur thought or not to~ its up to you to decide~ =)

if you do visit tw/hk forum sites, its like a whole point system there and shit. they implement their own things to their site to make it look like a world or some thing and their mod DO take action against off topic.

forums and blogging to me is really a very different thing altogether. forum as someone had already said is a place whereby a grp of people sharing the same interests to come together and *to me* make the interest more interesting, or lasting.. does it sound rite? lol nvm.. anyway, forums are really a great place to hang around to voice out opinions regarding things that u REALLY CARED.. if u nv like dota, even if u like to read around would u ever be here to post this reply or start this thread.. so, its the concern that all of us have for the dota community and what is it going to become that brought us to this forum *i guess* lol..

anyway, as for blogging, not much comments.. somehow (mayb due to past exp) hate some of the bloggers to target others WHILE not saying who is the person.. jus like if i wan to say something bad abt stripperA (sry ar, use as example), i can say, S*******A is so what what what do what what what, blah blah blah then continue story.. wan to blog wan to say then say it out, still wan act msyteriously.. then go confront the blogger, blogger say isit? no la.. nth.. -.-lll if not, another situation is flaming starts on blog, and even if someone impersonate u, blogger oso dunno.. and the war drags to work... -.-lll or rather to some, school..

I dont really care if people 'hijack' or trolls in my threads. Im not the type who get angry easily.
But its becoming quite a concern because such things can be prevented if mods were to practice their power. Topics which has been fully discussed should be closed. So does topics where questions has been answered. If a topic goes off-topic, and the off-topic topic is a worthy topic to discuss, a new topic should be made and the current topic be closed.
And this is so unlike of Singapore, theres like totally no rules here?

But ultimately, it is up to the group who has most control to influence the community to achieve the desired ideal forum.
Other than that, the current state of this forum is generally ok. If people still visit this site, it an indication that its good isnt it.

most ppl aren't natural theory-crafters so we play more dota~, but there should be more of them so we could learn a few pointers
